Northern Rail Strike 13th March – Impact on Hazel Grove

by paulankers on 11 March, 2017

LibDem Campaigner Paul Ankers is usually on the 7.22 Hazel Grove to Manchester Piccadilly on a Monday morning, but he like many of you will be affected by the strike for Monday prompted by fears changes that might signal the demise of the train conductor role.

KEY INFORMATION:

The earliest train from Hazel Grove is at 8.01, Manchester bound.

The first Buxton bound train is at 8.07.

The service is roughly halved in terms of numbers of trains. This will probably mean busier buses & roads. Normally, Hazel Grove has the advantage of being the starting point of a lot of our trains, so it is much easier to get a seat etc. than people who use other stations. However, no trains start at Hazel Grove on Monday, so they may already be busy by the time they arrive here.

Paul Ankers said, “The strike is partly to look out for our safety as passengers so that has to be acknowledged, but it is essential that this dispute does not drag on like it has down south. I am forced to drive on Monday, but I much prefer the train took the strain.”

NB: If the strike is called off at the 11th hour, which does happen, we may not be able to update this blog quickly, so check local news for any developments.

It cannot be due to “safety” as there have been trains doing our style of commuter services running in UK for many years. Provided the Train operators keep the Guards as Train attendant/Train Managers who close the doors then it would speed all our services up if the driver opened the doors. We can all relate to the Guard struggling back to the end of the train as we sit at a station just to open the doors.

Should have said “It cannot be due to “safety” as there have been trains doing our style of commuter services running in UK for many years as Driver only operation”
