The gates and railings of the Memorial Gardens are due to be restored this winter.
The work will involve the removal of the gates and railings to the workshop of a local heritage ironwork specialist where they will be restored. Sound elements of the gates and railings will be retained while rotten elements will be replaced with genuine wrought iron. They will be painted and then re-installed at the site.
Whilst the railings are off site, the low front wall will be rebuilt by a heritage stonework specialist. The work will take 3 – 4 months to complete as there are approximately 100m of gates and railings even in such a small park.
The plan is for the front gate and railings to be prioritised so that these can be reinstalled prior to Remembrance Day.
